We recently spoke with Paul-Jon Patin, current International Sunfish Class Association (ISCA) President, to talk about the upcoming Championship of Champions beginning on October 6, 2016 and running until October 9, 2016 at Lake Bluff Yacht Club in Illinois.
US Sailing’s Championship of Champions is an annual event that began in 1976. The goal of the event is to invite World, Continental and National championship winners to participate against each other in the same boat on an even playing field. This year’s event will be featuring LaserPerformance’s own Sunfish sailboat.
Paul-Jon has been President of the International Sunfish Class for 6 years and will be competing at this year’s Championship of Champions as the JY15 North American and Sunfish International Master’s Champion. He believes, “There is no better boat to accommodate this event for singlehanded sailing. Champions of different classes including youth, men and women from a broad spectrum of age and size can all come together and sail the simplest boat. It’s amazing.”
Young sailors who have won Optimist Championship titles will be competing against big names like Eduardo Cordero, the Sunfish 2016 North American Champion, 6-time title winner and 8-time World Champion. Also present will be Rich Chapman representing the Force 5 Class, and ParaOlympian Silver Medalist and World Champion bowman, Hugh Fruend. The Lake Michigan venue is beautiful and will certainly present challenging wind and sailing conditions.
This US Sailing event is definitely one to watch, Paul-Jon advised. He said, “The Championship of Champions is one of the most prestigious US Sailing events because it involves the best of the best. Excitement is in the air for this regatta!”
